Agnes “Aneta” Maria Kowal, 78, died peacefully in her Rockledge, PA home on Thursday, May 26, 2022 after bravely battling cancer for 6 years. Born in Yaroslaw, Ukraine, she was the daughter of the late Maria Pawlyk and Stephen Halamay. Her family emigrated to the United States in 1950 after escaping their homeland following World War II, passing through a displaced persons camp in Augsburg, Germany. She spent her early years in Boston, Chicago and on a chicken farm near Reading, PA, then eventually moved to live in New Jersey. She attended Rutgers University and earned a degree in Psychology. Aneta was a member of Plast Ukrainian Scouting Organization, in older years joining the Plast sorority “Ti Shcho Hrebli Rvut.” Through Plast she met her husband, Iryney Kowal, and the couple eventually settled in Berkeley Heights, NJ to raise their children. With the passing of her husband after 32 years of marriage Aneta relocated to the Philadelphia area to become the most loving and nurturing grandmother. Aneta was an accomplished pianist and an early member of the Ukrainian orchestra "Tempo". She was devoted to the success of the band and helped with musical arrangements, lyrics, and branding. Aneta was also a creative and talented artist and seamstress who enjoyed working with her hands on any kind of project including costumes for various Ukrainian dance schools, Ukrainian cultural arts, fine art painting, brick and stone construction, wallpapering, woodworking and other ingenious home improvements. Aneta is preceded in death by her husband Iryney Kowal, her sister Marta Halamay, and is survived by her children, Andrew (Erin) Kowal and Tanya (John) Buck, her brother Volodymyr Halamay, and her beloved granddaughters, Natalie, Kalyna, and Rigney.
