Alexandra Fedoruk

May 28, 1906 — August 3, 2010

Alexandra (nee Huryn) Fedoruk died at home on Tuesday, August 3, 2010, at the age of 104. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Oleksiy. Born, raised and educated in Ukraine, Alexandra was a teacher by profession who taught in Poland and Ukraine for a number of years before her marriage to Oleksiy Fedoruk in 1928. They had two children, Sviatoslav (Stanley) and Marika (Mary). The family left Ukraine in 1944 to escape the opposing German and Russian forces that had occupied their country. After living in a displaced persons camp in Germany, Alexandra and Oleksiy left for the United States and settled in Lancaster, Wisconsin, where they started life anew, working hard to raise and educate their children. After her husband’s death in 1982, Sandy, as she was known in Lancaster, continued to live in the community that had been so nurturing to her family. In 1994 she moved to Millburn, N.J., to live with her daughter, Mary and her son-in-law Basil. She also became a devoted member of the parish of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Newark, N.J. In 2006 Alexandra celebrated a very festive 100th birthday in the company of loving family and friends and enjoyed a surprise visit from the mayor of Millburn. It was a very memorable day in her life. Alexandra is remembered by all who knew her as a warm, caring and compassionate woman. She loved people and had a great zest for life, even at an advanced age traveling to the Poconos and Niagara Falls at the beginning of this year. She is survived by her son, Stanley Fedoruk, and his wife Elizabeth of Burnsville, MN, daughter, Mary Tershakovec, of Millburn, NJ, brother Adam Huryn and family of Pidvolochysk, Ukraine, granddaughters Amy Peterson with husband Scott of Aberdeen, SD, Anya Tomko with husband Brian of Short Hills, NJ, Alexandra Zawadiwsky with husband Michael of Mendham, NJ, Jill Fedoruk of Richfield, MN, Suzanne Herrick with husband Greg of St. Paul, MN, and great-grandchildren Katria Tomko, Mark Zawadiwsky, Kaden Peterson, Alexander Tomko, Deanna Zawadiwsky, Cole Peterson, Liliana Tomko and Nicholas Zawadiwsky.
