My mother, Alice Mahoney, passed away on Sunday May 25th just a few days after her 84th birthday. She had been living with emphysema for many years but finally succumbed to pneumonia, spending the last week of her life in the hospital. Death came quietly in the morning, and she was at peace. Mom was a caregiver her entire life starting when she was a young girl taking care of her deaf mute parents, all they way up to caring for my dad whenever he was sick. She worried about everyone and everything and went above and beyond to make sure we were all taken care of. Her last wishes state that she did not want a funeral or anything fancy, and we will honor that request. I am however planning a small memorial of some kind for family and friends at the Northport Public Library, where she worked for many years and which she loved tremendously. I will end with a few things I learned from my mom: * Enjoy life. Don't let fear of the unknown hold you back from trying anything no matter how new or scary it may be at first. * Accept people as they are. Don't try to change them to fit how you think they should act, dress or li ve. Ever yone has something special to offer. * Whatever it is, don't argue about the small stuff. * Tip generously, but send it back if it's not good. * Don't smoke. * Take care of dad (we are) Thank you to my kids Beth, Stephanie and Jared for being strong and helping me through this, my extended Freeman family for being amazing brothers, sisters and cousins, and thanks especially to my wife Lynne Freeman Mahoney without whom I would be completely lost in life. Alice was the beloved wife of Robert, the devoted mother of Charles and his wife Lynne and the loving grandmother of Beth, Stephanie and Jared.
