Alvin Dennis Williams was born on October 2nd ,1948 in Port Antonio, Jamaica, W.I. To many of his loved ones he was called grandad, daddy, uncle, pops, “old man”, or even simply Alvin with a few other nicknames you can probably think of. As a child he was known by his siblings to be the pretty quiet nonathletic type, except when he had to of course. To avoid chores or unwanted tasks he was known to run and ‘put his foot in his hands’ in the attempt to escape -- probably one of his few attempts at athleticism. After living in Port Antonio, where he also received his early education, he left and moved to Kingston to be with his father and gained employment with the insurance industry. Not long after, Alvin fulfilled his dream of becoming a chef and was initially employed in the hotel industry. He eventually worked his way up to being a chef on a yacht and later gained employment with the American embassy in Kingston, Jamaica. After a while he decided it was time to ‘spread his wings’ and accepted a job offer in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba where he immersed himself in the culture and learned Spanish. Alvin met Hyacinth (aka ‘Sunshine’) when she was about15 years old, it was love at first sight and they were like two peas in a pod. While in Guantanamo Bay he corresponded with the love of his life through tape-record messages. These messages were transferred back and forth between Jamaica and Guantanamo Bay by absolutely anyone who was willing to carry the recorded message every Tuesday or Friday. He also had a CB radio that he configured so that he could use it to communicate and reach the world. On the CB radio he was known as ‘Bugle boy’ and Hyacinth was ‘Bugle girl’. Just hearing him provided such laughter as he could be heard saying -‘this is bugle boy, come in, come in’—what a memory! Eventually the big day came, Hyacinth and Alvin tied the knot and the union produced 3 beautiful children – Alicia, Alonzo and Allana. Being in his presence was easy, he wasn’t the type of person to always demand your attention or talk your ear off….well unless you invited it. When and if you decided to have a conversation with him you’d have to be mentally prepared to keep up with the run around, riddles, and funny/dry comments that only his brain could think of. Other times being in his presence was like watching old westerns on a Saturday afternoon or quietly listening to blue grass in his car driving home from the store. He was known to simply say one outlandish comment and the room would erupt in laughter as he would innocently stand there asking ‘what’s the matter’. Many of you may know and remember also how he took—his---time and uniquely ran on his own timeclock when it came to everything. He loved children which showed in the way he interacted with not only his children but his grandchildren, and his many nieces and nephews. They all wanted and loved when he cooked meals for them, sang funny songs like ‘no more flies in the house’ while jostling to sit right beside him. There was always fun and laughter being around him. He loved to sing, one of his favorites being ‘Beyond the Sunset, O Blissful Morning’. As a man who loved the lord, he served as Deacon for his Church, Assistant Men’s Ministry leader and a member of the Church board. He was a caring and loving husband, a great father, a loving grandad, a wonderful brother the best uncle one could have. Alvin closed his eyes and said good-bye on July 12, 2022. He is preceded in death by his dad Norman, mother Ivy, sister Recilda, and brother Oscar. He is survived by his dear wife Hyacinth; children – Alicia, Alonzo and Allana; 2 sons-in-law ; 9 grandchildren;1 great grand; sister Kathleen; 2 sisters-in-law; 2 brothers-in-law; nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and a host of other relatives. Today, we bear in mind that one of his favorite hymns is now reality for Beyond the Sunset will be with him forever more. So, to Alvin our Daddy, Grandad, uncle, brother, pops, Bugle-boy, hymn singing, friend and deacon sleep well we know you’re not just ‘resting your eyes’ you deserve your rest, and we miss you already!
