ANNA PUCHY MATKO, Educator, 96 Mountainside, NJ Died August 25, 2012 - Born in Newark, NJ on August 18, 1916. - Oldest child of John & Suzanna Puchy, immigrants from Czechoslovakia, now Slovak Republic - Moved to Lyons Farm, later renamed Hillside, NJ, at the age of four. - Attended Hurden-Looker School in Hillside, NJ - Graduate of Hillside High School, Class of 1933. - Graduate of Newark Normal School, Class of 1936, and began her teaching career in fourth grade at Hurden-Looker School, Hilllside. - Continued her education, receiving a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Newark Teacher's College (now Kean University), Class of 1939. - Married C. George Matko, chemical engineer, in 1944, who pre-deceased her in 2000 - Began teaching in Mountainside, NJ, in 1966, where she became a beloved teacher in all three schools in the district, Echobrook, Beechwood, and Deerfield, teaching third grade, until 1980. - She was extremely proud of her career as an educator, as well as her heritage as a first-generation Slovak-American. - She is featured in the historical book: A History of Mountainside: 1945-2007, "Anna Matko Reviews a Half Century in the Borough". - Member of the Union County Retired Teacher's Association. - Lifetime member of the Holy Trinity Luthern Church of Union, formerly of Newark, NJ Pre-deceased by brother Julius J. Puchy of Aberdeen, NJ and sister Emily S. Maloof of Milton, MA. Survived by children: Susan C. Greenwood of Naperville, IL, and husband Dr. John C. Greenwod; George J. Matko of Mountainside, NJ; Elizabeth M. Stanton of Boonton, NJ, and husband Frank J. Stanton Survived by grandchildren Sarah S. Greenwood of DeKalb, IL; John R. Greenwood of Ontario, CA; David C. Stanton and wife Kristina L. Stanton of Rockaway, NJ; Paul G .Stanton of Mt. Arlington, NJ; Bryan K. Stanton of Rockaway, NJ Survived by beloved great-grandchildren Frank D. Stanton and David C. Stanton, of Rockaway, NJ.
