Carol J. Grant Mustillo

August 6, 1944 — May 23, 2017

Carol Jeanne Grant Mustillo was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey to James H. Grant, Sr. and Marie Anne Lebel. She was the youngest child of four and the only girl. Her father and mother showed her how to work hard, do more than what's expected of you, and how to raise a family. She took all she was taught and used it every single day. Carol graduated from Benedictine Academy in 1962 and Berkeley Secretarial School in 1964. Early in her career, she worked as a secretary for Panagra Airlines in New York City, which later became Braniff Airlines. She loved her time working for the airlines. She was able to do a lot of traveling, see the world, and meet new people...something she always loved to do. She excelled at every job she ever held, but the job that was dearest to her heart was her time as a certified tumor registrar (CTR). She trained to be a CTR at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, but the only hospital that ever felt like home was Columbus Hospital in Newark. There, she ran the Cancer Support Group meetings and planned and executed all of their Cancer Survivors' Days, creating a special theme every year. She moved on to other hospitals when Columbus closed, but none ever came close to the feeling she had working there and the bonds she formed with the staff. Even up to her final days, she talked about finding another CTR job that she could do remotely. She always had to be on the move, never wanting to retire and always wanting to keep her mind active and sharp. She really had a way of making you feel like you were the most important person in the world. She knew exactly how to calm you down if you were upset and give you words of encouragement for when things went wrong. And she always, always told you how much she loved you. She leaves behind many family and friends who will always remember her kind ways, sweet smile, the fierce love she had for her family, her love of reading, and not least of all, her dimples. Carol was preceded in death by her brothers James H. Grant, Jr. and Robert L. Grant, and is survived by her husband of 40 years, Luigi, daughters: Diana M. Wright and her husband Andrew, Antonietta M. Mustillo, and Maddalena M. Mustillo, son Luigi V., brother Edward W. Grant, and two granddaughters: Carolyn F. and Kathryn (Katie) M. Wright.
