Donald P Campbell

December 16, 1933 — February 1, 2017

Donald P. Campbell, 83 of Newark, entered into eternal rest on February 1st at Hackensack University Medical Center, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born December 16, 1933 in Jersey City to the late Alan & Regina (nee: Cormier), he graduated from Dickinson High School. After high school he enlisted in the US Army and honorably served in the Korean War from 1953-1956. On November 29, 1958, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Newark, he married his sweetheart, Frances (nee: Marasco), from which came three loving daughters and the beginning of a beautiful life. Don was employed for over 25 years with Public Service as a Diesel Mechanic, retiring in 1996. Shortly after, he became the Sacristan and Maintenance Man for Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, a position which he held for over 20 years. At the center of Don's life was his family and he was the patriarch. As his family grew with son-in-law's, grandchildren and great - grandchildren, so did his heart & desire for a tightknit family. He was most happy when all of his family could be together, such as Sunday's when everyone would gather around the table for food, conversation and laughs. He loved to cook and was a master at cooking in large quantities. Whether it was for Sunday Dinners, or the innumerable events held at the Church, Don (and the crew he lead) were there cooking & organizing. His meatballs, were a featured stand at the Church's Annual Feast as were his pancakes at the monthly Holy Name Society Meetings. For many, he was synonymous with events at Mount Carmel. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys and NY Yankee Fan. He loved to travel to Aruba and the Jersey Shore, for many years, the whole family would summer in Manasquan. He was a member of the Holy Name Society of Mount Carmel Church, the Buccinese Club and the American Legion - Post 1000. He is predeceased by his siblings, Margaret & James Campbell, Dolores Carney, & Dorothy Bode. He is the beloved husband of Frances (nee: Marasco), cherished father of Regina Oliveira (Tony), Filomena Zalewski (Carmine) & Jeanette Campbell, dearest brother of, Henry "Harry", Duncan "Gussie" Campbell, & Jean "Chickie" Salemi, proud grandfather of Anthony, Joseph, Daniel & Matthew Oliveria, Corinn, Donald & Alix Mary Zalewski, great-grandfather of John Melvin, Allison, Logan & Nathaniel Oliveira. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
