Joseph J Malanga

Deacon Joseph J. Malanga, 75 of Bloomfield, entered into eternal life on September 5th at Gates Manor. Born December 10, 1941 in Newark to the late Alfonse & Jean (nee: Accaria), he lived most of his life in Bloomfield. A passionate educator, Joe began his education career as a teacher at Southside Shabazz High School. He later became one of the founding members of University High School and served as its Vice Principal and VP at Wilson Avenue & Bergen Street Schools. A graduate of William Paterson University, he went on to achieve several Masters Degrees from UConn, Montclair State and Rutgers New Brunswick. A devout Catholic, Joseph entered diaconate studies with the Archdiocese of Newark and on December 14, 1975 was ordained in the first class of permanent deacons by the late Archbishop Peter L. Gerety. He served most of his diaconate at St. Valentine Church in Bloomfield, where he was a beloved member of the St. Val's Athletic Club and the Sodality of Mary. He is predeceased by his brother Philip. He is survived by his nieces, Carrieann DeVito & her husband, John, Dawn & Jeanmarie Malanga. He is the loving great uncle of Caitlyn, Joseph & Nicholas. Visitation will be held on Friday, September 8th from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Levandoski-Grillo Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 44 Bay Ave., Bloomfield, NJ 07003. The Funeral Mass will be offered on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. at St. Valentine Church, Bloomfield. A visitation will be held in the church that morning beginning at 9:00 a.m. Mausoleum entombment will follow at Holy Cross Chapel Mausoleum, North Arlington, NJ. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Valentine Church in his memory.
