Julia Lichowid Lysak, 90, died in Newark Beth Israel Hospital on January 30, 2016. Julia is survived by her husband of 65 years, Walter, her daughters, Paula Lysak and Susan Maguire and her son in law, James Maguire. She was predeceased by her daughter, Karen Lysak. Born in the Ironbound section of Newark, Julia moved to Hillside in the early 1930s where she graduated from Hillside High School and lived ever since. She had been employed by New Jersey Bell as a data entry clerk. Julia was very active in Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Church in Hillside. She held several offices in the Rosary Society, managed the kitchen during bingo games, managed the pirogie production and sales and volunteered for most fund raising events such as rummage sales, Chinese auctions and carnivals. Julia enjoyed sewing, her sewing machine always ready for her next creation or repair. She was involved in the planning and production of a hand stitched quilt that was auctioned to benefit the church. Her daughters inherited her sewing passion. She also enjoyed traveling and reading especially Royal and historical biographies. A special memory of hers was visiting the American Immigrant Wall of Honor on Ellis Island, where she proudly pointed to the engraved names of her parents, who immigrated from Ukraine. Memorial contributions would be appreciated to Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Church. Send donations to 40 Windemere Court, Whippany, NJ 07981.
