Mary Mediuch 5/1/26 -1/5/22 Mary Mediuch, 95 of Whippany, NJ passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her family on Wednesday January 5th 2022. She is survived by her daughter Kathy and husband John Welch, her son William, her daughter Mary, her grandson Brian, granddaughters Melissa, Katie and Danielle and husband Jess Ziccarello, as well as great grandson Zachary. Mary was pre-deceased by her daughter Irene and husband Wasyl. Mary lived a long, courageous and full life. Mary was born in a small village outside of Lviv, Ukraine on May 1, 1926. She had two brothers and two sisters and as a young girl helped work on the family farm. Mary spoke 4 languages and lived through World War 2, laboring a significant amount of time in a German work camp. At the end of the war, Mary was in a refugee camp which is where she met her husband, Wasyl. Mary and her husband immigrated to the US in September of 1950. They lived in Irvington NJ worked hard assimilating into American life while maintaining their Ukrainian culture. Mary loved to cook, garden and sew- all hobbies she passed onto her granddaughters. She was a skilled seamstress making clothes and especially Halloween costumes for her grandchildren. Her tomato garden yielded the most delicious tomatoes of which she maintained into her eighties. She was known for spending days before each holiday cooking up traditional Ukrainian meals. Her Babka, pierogies and stuffed cabbage were simply the best. This continued well into her later years with the added assistance of her family (referred by her as “my crew”). She worked at Yorkwood Savings and Loan in Maplewood for many years before retiring and spending more time with her grandchildren. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Her strong will, stoic persona and sassy sense of humor will be remembered by all. There will be a private funeral service on Monday January 10th at 11 AM at Saint John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Whippany NJ.
