Motria Sloniewsky

Motria Sloniewsky of McLean passed away on June 17, 2013. Born in Lviv, Ukraine, she arrived in the U.S. as a child with her parents in 1949. She attended the Marymount School of New York and then was one of the few female graduates of the Georgetown Foreign Service School in 1965. She married Roman Sloniewsky and became a homemaker, a mother and an interior designer, starting her own firm in the early 90s. Upon the independence of Ukraine, she helped in the design of the new Ukrainian Consulate and the U.N. Mission buildings in New York and the Embassy and Ambassador's Residence in Washington, D.C. She was an active member of the Ukrainian National Women's League of America, serving periodically as president of the local branch and officer of the national organization. She is survived by her beloved husband Roman Sloniewsky, son Michael Sloniewsky and wife Beverly of Katy, Texas, daughter Katerina Ntep and husband Armand of McLean, and grandchildren Maryanna, Nikolai, Alexander, Christina, Alayna, and Anna Pauline. She is also survived by her brother Dr. Ihor Voyevidka and his wife Martha of Reno, Nevada. Visitation will take place at Murphy's Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, VA 22203 on Thursday, June 20 from 5 to 8 pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated at the Ukrainian Catholic National Shrine of the Holy Family, 4250 Harewood Road NE, Washington, DC 20017 on Friday, June 21 at 10:30 am. Donations in her memory can be made to the Ukrainian Museum in New York, the Ukrainian Catholic National Shrine of the Holy Family or the American Cancer Society.
