Nicholas DeCresce, born September 23, 1959, passed away on September 19, 2018, just days away from his 59th birthday. Nick was born in Margaret Hague Hospital, Jersey City, NJ to the late Gilda (nee Passaretti) and Giuseppe (Joe) DeCresce. He lived most of his life on the Bayonne side of Country Village and his later years in Manhattan. A graduate of Our Lady of Mercy Elementary School and Bayonne High School, he attended The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), as he always had eye and love for fashion. He was employed by British Airways and Finnair throughout the eighties and nineties until the closure of their satellite in NYC. While caring for his elderly mother, he volunteered his time at The Sandy Hook Foundation, The New York Public Library, and the library at the GMHC (Gay Men's Health Crisis), NYC. He volunteered for the Suicide Prevention Hotline for 30 years. Nick was proud to be the son of Italian immigrants, often sharing stories of his family's voyage to the United States in the 1950's and the trials and tribulations his parents endured while building a life for their family here in America. He was a classic car enthusiast, in particular American late 50’s and 60’s models with “tail fins”. He was a great lover of history , that of his own family, as well as all and any other types. He loved music of all eras especially its origins and the stories behind its creators, singers, and musicians. He loved old movies, especially the Bette Davis/Joan Crawford years. His greatest love was Manhattan its people, its places, its culture, and most of all its history. Nick was predeceased by his loving parents, Gilda and Joe DeCresce. He will be sorely and greatly missed by his lifelong friend, roommate, and caregiver, Virginia Hildebrandt. In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his sister, Lena (DeCresce) Haarmeyer. He is survived by his brother, Bart DeCresce, and his wife, Patricia, and his brother-in-law, Jack Haarmeyer. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews: Christopher DeCresce and his wife, Jo Ellen; Carine DeCresce; Carla (Haarmeyer) Olmsheid and her husband Carey; James and Lindsay Haarmeyer, and Krista Haarmeyer, as well as several grandnieces and nephews: Luke and Sara DeCresce; Jacob and Noah Bogoski; Avery and Ashlyn Olmscheid; and Ellis Haarmeyer. A grave-side service will be held at noon on Friday, September 28, 2018 at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. We will miss you, Uncle Nicky.
