Rev. Dr. Ralph Garlin Clingan

February 7, 1941 — May 4, 2020

Rev. Dr. Ralph Garlin Clingan,Ph.D., passed away Monday May 4, 2020 at St. Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston at the age of 79.    Born in Arkansas, Dr. Clingan graduated from Okmulgee High School in 1959, he received his BA from the University of the Ozarks where he was called to ministry. He received his Master of Divinity from the University of Dubuque seminary. Ralph received his MA from Aquinas Institute of Theology and held his PHD in Biblical Theology from Drew University.  Ralph served as a minister in Scotland, Oklahoma, New York, Wisconsin and various churches in New Jersey. He taught Homiletics at the Interdenominational Theological Center, Atlanta, Georgia. He also taught philosophy as an adjunct professor in the New Jersey and New York areas. He was the author of two books, one of which was translated into Korean.  After retiring from ministry and teaching, Ralph was an active member of the Presbytery and the United Presbyterian Church of West Orange, where he sang in the choir, played clarinet and helped out with services as needed. Ralph loved a good joke and had a hearty laugh. He was very outgoing, enjoyed fishing, was a whiz at crossword puzzles, knowledgeable on a wide variety of topics and loved to dine out. Active on Facebook he maintained friendships from around the world, was always a supporter of social justice, and his recent travels included Cincinnati, Washington, India, Bali, South Korea, Africa and Greece.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph Clingan & Neva Talley and niece Angela Main.  Dr. Clingan is survived by his wife Maria (nee: Ambrose) and children, Laura Feldman and her husband Tim, Sam Clingan, stepchildren, Rachel Ercolino and Paul Ercolino, his brother Gordon and his wife Amanda, his sister Pat Morrison and her husband Mike.  He was also the proud and loving grandfather of Jessica Feldman. He also leaves his nephews Wade Clingan, Dr. Phillip Clingan, Lance Frederick and a host of great- nieces and great nephews.
