Roman Ferencevych, 91, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 16, 2021. Roman was born in Lviv, Ukraine. He was predeceased by his parents, Sofron and Eugenia. After WWII, he arrived in the United States, joined the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and was assigned to occupation duty in Germany as a member of the 1st Infantry Division. Upon his return to the States, he became a printer for the Ukrainian newspaper Svoboda. After graduating from St. Peter’s University, he moved to Washington, D.C., where he worked as a radio-journalist with Voice of America - Ukrainian Branch for twenty years, retiring as a senior editor in 1995. After retirement, Roman continued working on many projects advancing Ukraine’s culture, literature, language, and arts; he participated in Ukraine’s Orange Revolution on Kyiv’s Maidan in December 2004. A resident of Alexandria, VA, Roman was a member of the Ukrainian Catholic National Shrine of the Holy Family Church in Washington, D.C. He is survived by his sister, Olha Czmola, of Depew, NY, his sons, Mark and his wife Virginia, and Ihor and his wife Elise, five grandchildren, Andrew, Melanie, Christina, Emily, and Peter, four great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and many dear friends. Vuyko Romko (“Uncle Roman”) was also admired for his encyclopedic knowledge of Ukrainian history, and was beloved by those who knew him for his kind and caring nature. He will be dearly missed. A Funeral Service will take place on Tuesday, December 28, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 217 President St., Passaic, NJ. Cremation will follow privately.
