William Gural 95 of Springfield died in his home on Friday February 17. The family will receive friends at the Union Funeral Home 1600 Stuyvesant Avenue, Union, NJ from 4 to 7 PM Monday, Feb. 20. The funeral will be held at Calvary Episcopal Church, 31 Woodland Ave., Summit, NJ at 11 am on Tuesday, Feb. 21. Bill was born in Newark to Ukrainian immigrant parents on May 17, 1916. On graduating from Hillside High School at the height of the great depression in 1936, he served one term in the Navy and rejoined the Navy at the commencement of the second World War. After the war he earned his law degree from Rutgers University in Newark, set up office in Hillside and became interested in local politics serving two terms on the Hillside Township Commitee and serving as mayor in 1956. He worked as NJ Deputy Attorney General in the rates division and later set up and headed the state Division of Rate Council . After several years of retirement during which he took courses in NY at Fordham University's "College at 60" taking "the fun courses I hadn't had time for before", Bill was asked to serve as an Administrative Law Judge settling rate cases for the State. An enthusiastic fisherman, gardner, harvester, and nature observer he loved sharing his interests with others, especiallly children. Until his final illness, he was still splitting wood for the fireplace and planning his garden for the coming Spring. Bill is the brother of the late Anna Klimko and is survived by his wife of fifty six years, Eleanor Wisner Gural, his daughter Rachel Biello of Hope Valley, RI: his son Michael Gural of Boulder, CO; and his grandaughter Lauren Biello presently attending the Savannah College of Art and Design.
